The first ever livestreaming of proceedings, before three Constitution benches of the Supreme Court, evoked a huge response on Tuesday, with the number of total views crossing 8 lakh on last count and SC officials describing it as a “historic day”.
Officials of the apex court said the step will go a long way in overcoming the barriers of distance and providing citizens from every part of the country an opportunity to watch the court’s proceedings.
The three Constitution benches that sat on Tuesday were presided by Chief Justice of India U U Lalit, Justice D Y Chandrachud, and Justice S K Kaul. While the first fetched over 2.84 lakh views, the second grabbed the maximum eyeballs — over 4.17 lakh. Proceedings before the third bench were watched by more than 1.08 lakh people.
A full-court meeting of the judges had on September 20 resolved to livestream proceedings of the Constitution benches. This was followed by trial runs by the SC Registry.
After deliberations, the competent authority of the apex court directed its computer cell to coordinate with the National Informatics Centre’s (NIC) video conferencing (VC) division to livestream the proceedings on NIC’s YouTube channel.
Explaining the finer aspects, SC officials said the computer cell banked on its video conferencing platform, CISCO WebEx coupled with the state-of-the-art VC hardware and infrastructure.
All the courtrooms from where proceedings were livestreamed were equipped with Cisco VC Endpoint, with eight CISCO VC-enabled microphones and three 4K/HD cameras in each courtroom, with one camera focused on the bench and two on the advocates’ side.
